Before World War II BMW manufactured all kinds of machinery, including some epic motorcycles. During the war they made primarily aircraft engines. Post war, in 1947 BMW was permitted to re-start motorcycle manufacturing but there were two problems: none of the motorcycle designs survived the war, and most of the engineers who had worked on them before the war were taken into US or Soviet jet programs. So, to restart their motorcycle program the Bavarians took a pre-war R23 and reverse engineered it into the R24. In Noah's arc fashion that pre-war R23 is the great grand father of all BMW motorcycles.
