The Land Cruiser got its start during World War II when, in 1941, the Japanese Imperial Army captured a Bantam manufactured Jeep. The Army sent the vehicle back to Japan and eventually asked Toyota to manufacture it with some changes. Post war the US military asked Toyota to manufacture some Jeeps for use in the Korean War. This eventually led to the J40 being produced, which was available for civilian use and export, it quickly became the highest selling Toyota in America. Rugged and imminently reliable the lightweight FJ has been an off-road favorite for generations.
