Launched in 1973, just before the oil crisis, the 2002 Turbo was BMW’s first ever turbocharged model. BMW was so proud of this that they inscribed a mirror image of “TURBO” on the front bumper so other drivers could read in their rear-view mirrors that the car tailgating them had forced induction. The 2002 Turbo was the first turbocharged car since GM dabbled with the technology in the 60’s and inspired, in part, the turbo craze of the late 70’s and 80’s.
The 2002’s lithe handling, compact size, and turbo punch made it a legend. As one of the first ever compact-executive high performance cars the 2002 Turbo was the precursor to the M3 and all of its imitators.
