The 917 won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971 and it so dominated the Can-Am sports car series that it was banned to give other teams a chance. The 917 set the Le Mans distance record in 1971, a record which stood until 2010. Immortalized by its power, speed, and success (with a little help from Steve McQueen's film "Le Mans") the 917 took Porsche from underdog racer to dominate force a character that is in every Porsche racer since.
